While history still remembers the 1907 French treaties that redrew the borders between Siam and the Kingdom of Cambodia, returning Battambang and surrounding provinces to French Indochina, the city today feels infinitely removed from political tension. Even after recent border unrest, Battambang — located roughly 100 kilometers from the Thai frontier — has never been struck by Thai air attacks. Instead, it remains a serene oasis of calm, where colonial facades glow softly beside the Sangker River and life unfolds at an almost dreamlike pace. Cafés hum quietly, bicycles drift through sleepy streets, and the city continues to exist in its own peaceful, timeless world, in which I stepped myself in May 2026.
I spent my mornings experiencing the ultimate luxury: a slow, unhurried life. The third-largest city in the kingdom feels more like a sleepy, romantic dream. It is a living museum of French colonial architecture, where grand, old buildings stand proudly alongside the Sangker River. I rented a vintage bicycle and spent hours tracing the riverside paths, passing yellow-ochre facades, weathered pastel shutters, and majestic colonial monuments that have faded gracefully under the Cambodian sun.
