OUR CSA-CZECH AIRLINES BUSINESS CLASS IN-FLIGHT TEST PRAGUE - CAIRO: Our in-flight inspection was made on February 2002, flying aboard a brand new Boeing 737-500 from Paris to Prague. Then aboard same model of aircraft from Prague to Cairo. The very short transit allowed us to briefly enjoy the very recently modernized Praha-Ruzyné airport. It looks far better now: with clean, clear and huge waiting rooms. First privilege, our Busines Class ticket allowed us access to the new Business Class Lounge (they actually call it ABC Lounge). Though less intimate than the old one (but it reportedly should be re-designed sooner), it can accommodate more people at ease. And there is still a selection of freshly imported magazines and newspapers available free of charge. For a fee, which is actually cheap, some computers are available: linked to the Internet, with fast speed connection. Wines and alcohol are at the kind disposal of the travellers, with some crackers and peanuts. Staff is helpful and efficient. We made a test, asking somebody to send a message to the lounge, to our attention: it was delivered in our proper hand as soon as we entered the room. When last call came, it took us ten minutes to be transferred to the aircraft. Just before taking off, we enjoyed a cocktail. This is quite a short 3 hour and 50 minutes flight: as soon as we reached the cruise speed, aperitifs and dinner came on our tablet. Surprisingly quite gourmet oriented. We had a Smoked Trout Filet, Green Salad, Egg and Lemon Wedge. An excellent Chicken Steak Cordon Bleu, Parisienne Potatoes, Boiled Green Asparagus and Shaped Carrots was the main meal we selected from the menu. The chef prepared it a light way, just to make it perfectly digestible for passengers. This is a CSA policy to propose some international but also Czech and Central European specialities aboard; who should complain ? Shouldn't an aircraft be a flying embassy somehow ? Pine seed bread is also part of the regional gastronomy: it was freshly backed the same early morning in Prague. We were proposed French wine, but preferred a glass of "Bohemia Regia": our palate already enjoyed this original Bohemian brut, which keeps its proper and distinguished identity. It goes very well with the local cuisine and, like just like it, it kept peasant roots which makes the essential difference with the Austrian sekt, its closest neighbour, which tries since centuries to compete with the Champagne. Cheese was a Dutch Edam; we suggest that a selection of French cheese should also be proposed. Which would be a good, thought maybe quite smelly, idea to please sophisticated palates... Dessert was a light and delicious Coconut Slice cream-cake. As a matter of fact, we could see -and taste !- by ourselves the permanent upgrading of F&B aboard CSA. Same remark on shorter flights (see our CSA IN-FLIGHT TEST PARIS-PRAGUE). As a digestive, please try one glass of Becherovka on ice: this aromatic herbs liquor offers the particularity to be the renowned speciality from KARLSBAD (KARLOVY VARY): a SPA whose water is not the unique attraction... and therefore much frequented by Russian tourists ! We reached Cairo exactly on time: the pilots should have a Swiss watch. The Sky Team alliance, whith its code sharing, makes the schedule perfectly adapted to the business travellers. For updated details, see the OFFICIAL CSA TIMETABLE. We also found ground services excellent. Cairo airport is a big mess, and we enjoyed very much the assistance of the efficient CSA station manager, Mr. Ibrahim. Also, the way back to Europe, we could use the "Egyptair First Class Lounge"; quite basic on the international standard, this is nevertheless an oasis of relaxation and comfort in that terrible airport! More than a luxury: a necessity... The Czech Airlines office has been totally refurbished, for a splendid comfort when booking or confirming your flight. It is located on the main shopping avenue in the very center of Cairo. A five minutes walk from the Egyptian Museum. With very friendly, welcoming and efficient staff. CSA-CZECH
